Vending Moves to More Aluminum

New vending machines on Teer, Level 1Less plastic, more metal.

To reduce plastic waste, beverage vending machines in buildings around Harrington Engineering Quad (including Teer and the Fitzpatrick Center) were swapped out on Thursday, Feb. 21.

The new machines, provided by GREENgineering partner Duke Stores, dispense all soft drinks in aluminum cans. Aluminum has a more robust recycling commodity market than plastic bottles and is endlessly recyclable, unlike plastics.

Even so, the most sustainable choice is to not use disposable beverage containers.

GREENgineering is working on providing more support for that choice—look for more reusable bottle-filling water fountains around Duke Engineering in coming months.
